I am attemptin to learn Photoshop using the book Classroom in a Book. I am currently on Lesson 7, but can't seem to get beyond a problem with the patch tool. Specifically, I'm trying to remove some bolt holes on a mountain side, adjacent to a climber. My instructions say to select the patch tool, circle the bolt holes, and drag the selection to an unblemished area of the rock. I can see the original area displaying the same pixels as the lassoed selection, but when I release the mouse the holes are still there. However, weirdly enough, if I do this same thing in reverse over an unblemished area and move to the holes, new holes appear in the unblemished area. My question is: Why can't I make the holes dissapper when I circle them and move to another area? The Source is selected in the tool options bar.

I am aware that there may be other methods to remove the bolt holes, but that would defeat the purpose of the lesson. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It sure sounds like you are doing it right.
Make sure you select a pretty generous area around the bolt-holes, don’t just trace the edge.

(plus it would help if the area around the holes is the same tone/color as the area you are sampling.)

Thank you very much. As you advised, I selected a large area, move slightly to an area of the same tone and like magic, the holes are gone.
