I have a feeling that the "use legacy" checkbox in Brightness/Contrasst does a bit more than just increase the slider length and effect of brigness and contrast.

It means to use the old (legacy) method of control versus the new improved rmethod that does a better job (less clipping). But generally speaking you're still better off using curves or levels.

I use the legacy settings on a brightness/contrast layer clipped to the high pass layer of a split for sharpening.
