ok, so heres the story:

im currently using photoshop 7 btw

k so i scanned a picture, and its scanned into a the backround layer

the thing is, i want the scan to be in a diff layer, like this>

>scan layer
>coloring layer
>backround layer

so i have to move the scanned image from the backround layer to the scan layer, but the problem is, the backround layer is like... permanently locked, and i dont kno how to budge it

also after that, how do i change the contrast and brightness of the image as a a whole?

if you double click on it while holding the alt button, it will become a normal layer (Oybro has made a topic about it: http://www.photoshopforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1478)

As to the contrast.. go to image/adjustments/ contrast-brightness

Hope this helps..

If you duplicate the background, you will have the original (the backgroundlayer) and the second layer you can work on.

Hope this helps..

You can also make any layer the background layer if the document doesn't already contain a background layer. Click on the layer that you want to make the background layer and go to Layer -> New -> Background from Layer.

This will only work if there is currently no background layer in your document.
