Photoshop won't open image files

Photoshop can open jpgs and pngs if opened from Photoshop directly (file > open) but will not open an image file from my desktop or a folder. Trying to set Photoshop as the default program to open a file also does not work; Photoshop simply doesn't show up in my list of "recommended" and "other" programs, even if I browse and find the Photoshop.exe. Quite a sticky situation. Any help would be amazing : ) (I'm using Windows 7 and Photoshop CS5)

now i am using photoshop cs5 with win 7 64 bit...

sort of surprised it not showing up....

did you try using wndows explorer and do a right click on the jpg file and click "open with" cs5 should up there also and just click and also make sure "always open with" check box is checked....

now if cs5 isn't showing in the primary list or the other list..... ....mmm..... see if you can go to the exe and choose that....

now the only other thing i can think of.....
is put a jpg file in your "my pictures" and then try and see if cs5 shows up.....

why that might work... because it appears to me that windows will try to guess at what program you want... and if a designed graphic folder is chosen... the it will list various programs avail for graphics... sound strange doesn't it..lol ...

Another thing to try would be the file associations in the Bridge preferences.

Call up Photoshop, click on Bridge.
When Bridge opens, go to edit->preferences
Choose file type associations and look for jpeg (or anything else you want to associate.

Maybe that will work.

@renata I got really excited when Bridge let me set jpgs and pngs to use Photoshop, but, it seems that Windows still doesn't recognize the changes...

i olygot a couple of ideas left.... grrr....

1. take a look at this article and see if these are the same steps you have used if not then try them and see if these work...

2. now another idea and it sort of bother me for quite a while and that is why photoshop doesn't appear in your default program listing....

i am thinking maybe just uninstall and reinstall the program...

id did fin a couple of thread about editing the registry like this one... but not sure if i would do that...

Hmm. That is very strange. jerryb4417 may be right in suggesting uninstall/reinstall, since Windows doesn't seem to "recognise" Photoshop.

Can you remember whether there were any issues with the installation? What do you see when you go to the uninstaller - is Photoshop listed? When you call up Photoshop, are you clicking on a shortcut, or have you been able to set up a nice button (with logo) for it somewhere in your startup menu?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just rambling, trying to think of possibilities.

hi,
i did some more serching and found this little thread... now it addresses png but overall symptoms seems to be the same..

i saw two solutions...
1. there mentioneing deleting a what soundslike the orginial ext and then rebuild it..... but unclear tome...

2. the other address a registry fix but always leary of registryfix ... if you go that route make sure you make a restore pint and make a backupof the registry before making chnges... i still sort of favor reinstalling and if you do make sureyou uninstall and delete any photoshop folders and make sure all programs running in the background are turn off....

one other thing may not mean nothing at all or apply ...
the files do any of them have *.jpeg for extentions? sort of grasping for straws... smiling sometimes programs don't recognize that 4 letter extention ..

@renata I don't remember when Photoshop started acting a fool, but the icons are still intact and nice in the startup menu. (Rambling is good, btw, hehe).

@jerryb Yeah, registry fixes get me all shaky...a reinstall is probably what I'm going to do.

Too bad.
Really unlucky.

Least you may get it sorted with a bit of luck.

Let's hope a re-install does the trick, if not perhaps an email to Adobe.

I am experiencing this too, for the first time today. Windows 7, 64-bit. Photoshop 12.1 64 bit. About to restart to see if it solves it.
