Plug-ins are very useful tools and I find them helpful, but they are not a necessity. You can get by without them, but if you are going to get a plug-in I would say EyeCandy 4000, EyeCandy Nature (I think it is nature 5, but I'm not positive) or almost any EyeCandy software is good, but EyeCandy 4000 would be the best to get if you were to only be able to get on of them.

BTW, I am using plug-ins less and less lately, I have been using tuts to learn how to create cool effects with the stuff I already have and I have been just plain messin around with my filters.

LOVE the Alien Skin plug ins...good for novice or advanced users. There's a package called Xenoflex that is incredible...you can download it and play with a full functioning edition for a month. See if it works for you. They also do Eye Candy (awesome) and the associated additional sets.

Flaming Pear has some wonderful plug ins (flood and some of the photographer friendly options)..,but their customer support is a HORROR.

The most useful free set, IMHO, is from Vizros for an excellent page curl and picture cube.

For lens flares that rock, try Knoll Light Factory 2. It's a HARD filter to use, but it's worth the effort.

Hope it works for you...plug ins are a pretty personal preference thingie.

I find nik color efex pro 2.0 to be a good investement. I have also tried Virtual Photographer from optical labs and it's as good as Nik. I also use Knock out 2 for masking, and i am dying to try the new masking plugin Fluid Mask.

Is there a type of brush or plug-in that will make an image look really smooth like a fantasy type appearance? I hope this question doesn't confuse you all. I am new here and still surfing around the forums. Angel

Any referrals?

meaby Mystical lighting?

you can also duplicate the image, go to filters>blur>gausian blur, and blur the duplicated layer a bit! then in the layers palette set the blending mode to soft light! you can also play with the colors and the brightness! ;);)

The main advantage of using plug-ins is speed and ease of use, especially in a production environment. Granted, if you have the time and the chops, you can create many of the effects using your image editor alone. But not all effects!

So if you can afford it, go for the plug-ins (or at least try the demos to see what you're missing).
