General comment for everyone: how many real world logos do you see that incorporate photos? Very few, and those that do are generally amateur jobs. The reason is that a logo has to be infinitely scalable, but a photo won't look good too small (the detail will be lost) or too big (it isn't vector, so you'll lose resolution). Also, logos should generally be kept as simple as possible.

Of the submissions, I vote for ekosh's. Without the photo in the background, it would be very good. Aside from removing the photo, the only thing I'd change is the typeface. Yes, clean sans serif typography is "in" these days, but it doesn't reflect the edgy, energetic feel that an extreme sports company would want to project. Something scratchy and italic/oblique, maybe.

ronmatt's submissions are technically adept, but the first one reminds me too much of other logotypes already out there, while the second one is too busy.

TheOgre's, I will refrain from commenting on, because it isn't a logo at all.

I like ekosh's design, and as xopods mentioned, the photo in the logo may need to go for most items, i do like that it is there, and could always be swapped out for different items, while used without any photos for company branding.

ronmatt's designs are very crisp. When I thought of the company name, I had something in my head about a glass tipping over, with either film, or something spilling out, the other entry is good, however, I also feel it is a little busy.

TheOgre's submission was more a graphic than a logo, so no real discussion there.

Overall, both of the submissions were very good. In terms of real world workflow, we would go back and forth with both designers and get the logo to where the client was happy. Since this is a contest though, my vote goes to ekosh. I chose his entry because there was less that I would want to change before the logo would be ready for use.

If any other contests come up, maybe we can organize it a little better, and see if we can get more than a couple entries?

I agree with the judges. I am an illustrator, not much of a logo designer. My stuff tends to be busy and somewhat overdone, But that's what I do best. It was fun though and I'll take a shot at the next logo contest. ROCK ON>
