I can't seem to get my pictures light enough

The blending mode is done in the layers window, not the brush toolbar. If you don't have that, go to Windows->Layer. There, after you duplicate the layer, should be a drop down box, defaulted at Normal, click on the arrow and select lighten. After this Merge Down (Ctrl+E)

that's the point where I get confused. when I get to the merge down - what do I do. All it does is put squiggly lines all over the place! Aack!!

ok, one click the layer you want to merge(you merge with the layer below) i often find ctrl+e doesnt always work. goto edit and then merge donw and it should merge the layes but you shouldnt notice a differance.

Well thanks for the offer Ted but I have to learn how to do this myself - I have a whole website of pictures to do. I'm just in the learning stages so I'm sure I'll get it eventually - especially with help from people like you! thanks again

2 Hue Satutation layer masks.One for the pearls and the other for their shadows.
