To the untrained eye they look the same. Is there a visual difference between both filters?

It works with the underlying layer rather than replacing it. It produces the same pattern as cloud filter but if you use the edit>fade command and change the layer blend mode to difference then you should see the result.

This forum and it's members are goldmine of information about Photoshop.

Here comes another stupid question, drum-roll please...

What does the edit>fade command do?
I've tried to use it but it's always grayed out

Searched the net and I got it

Why is Adobe putting these redundant features in PS?

As far as I understood the fade feature/tool dies the same thing as putting or drawing something on a new layer then changing the opacity of that layer

While we are talking about redundent features, why not talk about content aware move, isn't it just; cut, paste in new location, content aware fill the hole created by cutting ?

Come on Adobe, you can do better than that!!
