I need to remove the white background / the design from this logo, but can't figure out a way to do it without the logo looking shoddy.
If anyone could offer any tips or anything that would be greatly appreciated.
(big pic so I'll just post a link)

I had a quick go using select>color range. It worked ok, except it selects the white around the letters as well. If you don't mind that, then you can experiment with the fuzziness setting till you're happy with the result. Here's one way:

Steps:
1)duplicate background layer in case you stuff up and want to start over
2) hide background layer so you can see what you're doing with the new copy (click on the eye icon)
3) select copy of background layer

Now for the selection
4) use select>color range
5) set fuzziness (I found around 167 was a good place to start)
6) use eye dropper to click on part of the white background
7) click ok. This will take you back to the image with marching ants showing the white parts selected
8. click backspace or delete to get rid of the background.
9) press <control>d to deselect the marching ants

Tip: If you add a colored layer underneath, you'll be able to see whether it's a good selection or not.

Let us know if that helps. Good luck.

Thanks for that, it worked well.
Now I want to get rid of the image behind the logo (The angels / leafy pattern), but seeing as this image is the same colour as the border of the text (which needs to stay) I'm not sure how to do this.

Hmm. I think the good old eraser might be the go here, with a hard edged brush and a bit of patience.

If you use the the left and right square brackets, [ and ], to vary the brush size as you go (make it a big brush for the isolated bits and a tiny brush for the bits that are attached) and you should be OK.

If you stuff up, <control>z will undo the last eraser stroke. If you want to undo more than one eraser stroke use <alt><control>z (windows).

It can also be helpful to have "zoom with scroll wheel" turned on (under edit>preferences>general). This makes it easy to zoom in and out. Finally, pressing the space bar as you erase brings up the hand tool so you can move the picture around for a better view (release the space bar to go back to the eraser).

It is also possible to do stuff with the pen tool, to get more precise curves, but it takes a bit of practice.

See how you go.

Cheers again dude.
I had been using the pen tool by recreating the countour then stroking, deleting path and deleting inside of the stroke (not sure if you can follow that lol), but the edges came out looking really bad:

I don't really have many more ideas, maybe someone else will have an answer.

Is it for the web, or will you need to print it? If it's for the web, I still think the eraser is a valid way.

You could go over that edge with the magnetic lasso, then, if you have CS5, use "refine edge" on it. It has an option to shift the edge (one or two pixels might make a difference).

Or you could pen a path over the rough edges and then "stroke" it with the same colour over the rough bits. Try one edge at a time. Put your stroke in a new layer above and you can easily delete it and try again.

Looks like you're nearly there.

1. use pen tool to outline
2. use eraser or better yet, mask and use brush out areas
3. seems like everyone thinks photoshop should have a button to do things instead of having to actually do some work.
