The easiest way to remove the white, that I can think of, is: Layer Styles / Blend If. Split the slider using Alt/option and click on the slider. Total timn: seconds.
Ergo ...

Good point Crapaud, but it removes all the white. I believe OP wanted some white retained.
If I am mistaken forgive me Crapaud and nice job on pointing out a more 'advanced' technique, great stuff!
*edit* having said that a layer mask with your technique would work wonders if the white was still wanted.*/edit*

Thanks Crapaud, I wouldn't have thought of that. I've jotted it down in my little book. Descriptions of any other methods gladly welcomed...
Do you have any other recommendations of techniques, Seaco? You're a master and I'd love to learn more.

Hi Renata
As I have said before I try to do these things in the easiest way possible to get the effect I want it turns out that I did the same as you suggested and did SELECT/COLOR RANGE chose the white then hit BACKSPACE the rest was done with the pen tool and a hard edge eraser about 25mins work...
As has been said by 4Dragons you can't expect Photoshop to do it all you still need to put in some work!

*edit* having said that a layer mask with your technique would work wonders if the white was still wanted.*/edit* | I didn't read the OP's request as meaning leaving any white, hermit. You could reapply the white on a new layer underneath, though.
I did miss the mission creep of removing the angelic gubbins. Pen would be my tool of choice, I think.
Lots of ways to achieve the same thing, Renata.
Method 2: Alpha channels
Make a new channel. Click on the red to select it, invert and fill with white. Repeat for the green and blue. Levels adjust to make it absolute B&W. Use the new channel to make a mask and, as Hermit suggests, paint the mask to reveal the required white. This depends on the image and won't work in all circumstances.
