Hi, I am looking for the best laptop (around $1500) to work with and edit large image files in photoshop CS5 (my D800 produces files about 60 megs each). It could have a 15.6" screen but 17" would be better. Dell is trying to sell me an XPS Laptop L702x Intel® Core™ i7-2760M but I am not too keen on Dell's reputation and this computer does not have a graphics card that supports Open GL. Having said that I am not too sure how important Open GL is but I know that it does enable photoshop to do some kinds of processing quicker. Such a graphics card may well not be too important and/or come at a price well outside of my budget.

I have been told at least 8 megs of ram is very important as is having 3 disks. One smallish one for programmes, one large one for data and one small but fast SSD that would be great as a photoshop scratch disk. Two of these disks could be internal and one external. Can you have an external SSD disk that functions at full speed?

The next problem I will have is that I am living in France and need an english keeboard but I'll face that hurdle once I have the computer I am looking for.

Any help you could give me on this would be very greatfully accepted.

The simplest answer is that all laptops are touch and go. I've had great success with Toshiba Satellites, and they're still my preferred laptop, but really, you just have to shop around to find which one best suits your needs.
The core i7 is definitely not a bad way to go. I have a Dell desktop, but not a dell laptop so I can't say about those. When it comes to PC's, HP and Compaq seem to be the heartiest.

I would say to stay away from refurbished, but that's just my opinion after having bad luck with refurbs in the past.

Even I have a Toshiba Satellites, it's pretty good, but later on when the photoshop files get bigger, it's a bloody nightmare.. so I had to switch to Mac, I can't work on any graphic software without a Mac.. Sorry..

Hi K-Touch,
I am on the market for a Mac Book Pro 13inch. Do you think this will be able for Adobe Photoshop. I have been told by some people that the 13inch would not be powerful enough and that the 15inch with the AMD Radeon HD graphics Card is a must for Photoshop.
What model is your Mac and how well does it handle Adobe Photoshop.
Thanks Michael O Meara.

Hi mikeytoomo,

I think the 15inch with the AMD Radeon HD graphics Card would be much better, I don't use a laptop, I have a Mac G5 Pro, Beautiful with 6GB ram, it's mad, I love it.. can't work with out it.. Why don't you go to the Apple store and ask and see if everything works out...

Good Luck : )
