Now I have discovered the wonders of patching the HF layer ( after splitting an image into high and low frequencies).
When do you split into HF/LF then patch as opposed to patching or using the spot healing tool on the original image? |

It doesn't really matter, whatever tool at that stage that gets the job done - I always use the clone tool or the heal tool on lighten/darken/normal - but never the spot heal tool and once in a million the patch tool.
I would however add a blank layer and then clip it to the HF layer.
Oh and make the split a smart layer - you can adjust to taste later. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

I found the HF/LF technique interesting but not very practical because you can do the same with the clone/healing tools, a lot more quickly.
Whenever I do any healing or cloning, I do it on a separate blank layer which leaves the original layer intact. Is that what you mean by "I would however add a blank layer and then clip it to the HF layer"? |

The point of the split is that the high frequency contains the texture and the low layer only the colour information, this makes it easier to clone/heal without affecting one or the other. Often with skin etc it may not be practical, but when you have to take creases out of fabric you may need exactly this technique. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |
