Hi,

I'm an indie Mac developer and I'm updating some assets for the new Retina Display-equipped MacBook Pro's and I'm running into some anti-aliasing issues.

It's easier to show than to describe, so have a peek at the attached png.

The asset I'm preparing is the blue circle in the control. It looks great when it isn't selected.. but when it's about to be selected you can see the white border on the blue selection gradient.

I've been playing around for a while now and I now understand that there is a "matte" color that is used to do the aliasing when saving as a PNG8.

I foolishly assumed that the fact that the box in the "Save for Web..." dialog was blank meant there was no matte color, but apparently it means that the matte color is white..

So I tried selecting "None". This makes the white halo go away (hurray!) but the circle now looks terrible both when it is selected and when it isn't.

On PNG24 there isn't even an option.

Why do I need a matte color in the first place? Is there any way of making the circle look good on both the blue gradient and inside the grayish control?

Help!

Save it as a PNG24 file.
PNG8 does not support alpha/transparency levels. This means with PNG8 a pixel is either completely opaque or completely transparent, no in between.
