about ready to throw in trash!!
I keep getting orange, green , brown etc. backgrounds when making a trans image.
Useing jpg picture, extracting, cleaning up, then saving for web as a gif.
Is this the process? I get one that comes out and then none after that!
Can somebody please explain the proper process so I can get on with my life and start growing hair again.

Well, you’re doing something wrong. 
It would help if you gave more detailed steps. “I get one that comes out and then none after that!” does not give folks here enough information to offer advice to help you out.

I tend to get crappy results when extracting images,I get some of the backround in my finished product,have you checked your image settings? I know I goofed alot their when I started out. Not sure I helped

Well, as far as more info goes.... What I do is click "file". click "open" and grab a picture. Then move curser across and click "image", I go down to "extract" and extract the image in the center of a 768x1024 jpg digital camera picture. I make sure the "transparency" box is checked and click "ok". the image removed now goes back into the main area. I clean it up with the eraser and make sure the "transparency" box is checked and then click on the "file" button again in the upper left hand corner and select "save for web".
I make sure it says gif and that the transparency box is checked and then click "ok" The settings thing says "unnamed" other below says "selective" then the one below that says "no dither". "interlaced" is not checked, "256 colors", "0 lossy", "0% web snap" I click ok and it is saved as a "compuserve gif" "save html file" is not checked in the windows save box.
Sorry I was not more discriptive. I do not know if this is the wrong process of doing a transparent image.

Your first post sounded like you were able to save one .gif with transparency, then none subsequent to that.
When you Save for Web as a GIF, you are seeing the checkerboard (indicating transparency) background in the Preview? And if you are using more than one Preview, you have the correct one selected when you save.
And, when you save a jpg as a gif, SFW creates a new and different file. (i.e., make sure you’re not reopening the original jpg file expecting a transparent background.)
Also, remember that gif will not support semi-transparent pixels. So choose a matte color to match whatever background it will be placed on.
Hope this helps. It is probably something simple. If this does not work, post an example.
And I just saw you are using 5.5… hope all my advice is still relevant. Did 5.5 even have SFW? Can’t remember…
Here is more advice: if at all possible, upgrade.

Yes, both when I extract and when I SFW (save for web)

No, I save it as what it is plus add a number. I use image expert to get the images off my camera and then save those in a seperate folder on my desktop. Visually you can see the difference between the two. Curser rollover also shows the difference.
Stop the presses!! I have just noticed that when putting it in an attachment to show you here, this is how it comes out- Transparent!
Go to my web site (http://www.highpeakcrossco.com/Crosses3.html) and see what it looks like there- that is the problem, a green background yet I have one there that is also transparent.
Those are the same photo! now what? the hole just gets deeper.
cbadland thanks for your help, I don't know what to do now. any advice?

Cbadland,
I think I got it!! The image was being optimized by my web host thus loseing trans and reverting to a jpg. have to stay under 600x800.
