I want to make a lightsaber video (10mins-15mins) and im not sure if I should use the frame by frame method. That would take days upon days to finish. Does anyone know any other methods to create the lightsaber effect without doing it frame by frame? Also, I will be using Adobe Premire 2.0 PRO for the video editing.

depending on your filming techniques, you could make it take a bit less time. What iw oudl advise would be to keep yourself limited to three main shot lengths, A longer shot, a medium shot, and a close-up. Have set distances for each one and always keep your shots within the balllpark of one of these lengths. Then, you'll have three cooresponding actions. or if you decide that this is too limiting, have 5 lenghts and 5 actions.

Also, once you've got your actions done, you can pawn off parts of the footage to other members of the team for editing duty. Many hands make light work.

There are two animation programs to do the lightsaber effect they are called Maya and Lightwave. If you have the $$$ AND the CPU power for it and the time to learn Maya, it is well worth the price. Doing this in Photoshop would require you to do it frame by frame - that is 15-30 frames per EVERY second depending on how real you want it to look. THEN you have to go back and add (mask) in the poeple and the backgrounds per EVERY frame. THAT would be allot of work and memory to do in Photoshop.

The best bet I would suggest for you to learn how to do this is to join a gulid called http://www.pixelcorps.com. They have members/trainers in the pixel corps that did the lightsaber scenes in THE ACTULL Star Wars movies 1, 2, and 3.

Good luck!
