does slicing bigger images into smaller ones reduce the size of the image,?

I think that its a carry over from earlier web programs and death slow connections (28. .
It might appear to be loading faster because the parts start popping up to form the image but is it really any faster? I don't think so. Not a big fan of slice-an-dice.
