Hello, I am running photoshop CS5 on a mac. When I try to use any of the select tools Marqee or Lasso it just doesn't work, when I try and drag it nothing happens. When I select the tool the cursor is replaced with a normal cursor but with a small notepad symbol in the bottom left corner.
It seems to be intermittent, I tried restarting my computer and it worked for only a short time and then the issue arose again.
I have exams that require my use of photoshop so I need an answer as quick as you possibly can, feel free to ask any questions and thankyou in advance.

You can try resetting the workspace and tools, see this thread

Could also try tuning off openGL.

Not a mac owner unfortunately, ill keep your problem in mind though.

That isn't working.

The actual problem is probably a setting I have or something I have accidently clicked.
When I press the marquee tool the cursor changes to a standard one with a small little box on the right that looks a bit like a piece of note paper.

Not sure about that one it might be a mac cursor.

Nothing in my version has a notepad looking box next to it.

Someone else here should know the cursor of which you speak about.

Anyone?
