Sounds to me like you inadvertantly named the file with an extension that photoshop is unfamiliar with. For example .... imagename.psf instead of imagename.psd.

Once you have the pen tool selected, make sure the little button "Paths" is selected near the top of the screen. Chances are, you have "Shape Layers" turned on instead.
