I was wrong. Png format does work in Inkscape.

jpg format will not retain transparency!!!!!...

if you want your image to retain transparency then you need
to either save the image in GIF or png or tiff formats... they will retain
transpa ...

I am really new to photoshop 9 and am just learning. I've figured out
how to remove a background but when I save it to jpg it saves with that
white background behind it.
