I am really new to photoshop 9 and am just learning. I've figured out
how to remove a background but when I save it to jpg it saves with that
white background behind it.
I've been using vintage images in my designing and am trying to use the
image without the background or pieces of the image in my designs using
Inkscape.

hi,
jpg format will not retain transparency!!!!!...
if you want your image to retain transparency then you need
to either save the image in GIF or png or tiff formats... they will retain
transparency.... also when you save in those formats you'll
be getting alittle window, when you save, make sure the transparency box is check marked

Jerry,
Those formats won't work in Inkscape. Can I save them as Gif or Png and then convert them and have the transparency stay in the conversion?

first of all i don't have inkscape so i am heavily relying on what ever documentation i find...

now with inkscape... according tothier documentation you can import those formats i mention... here inkscape's article below.... it should be able toopen a transparent format like png or gif or tiff....

You really went the extra mile to look that up. Thanks.
I'm learning Inkscape to use with a cutting machine by following the machine
tutorials.
I'm not too familiar with the different formats that it would take or the differences between the formats. I will have to check that out.
I just went and tried a PNG after your post and it worked.
I have a lot of studying to do in both.
I got Photoshop with the purchase of a new printer and found I could
remove backgrounds- now I want learn photoshop also.
You probably will be hearing from me again!

on the photoshop is that photoshop elements or photoshop ver X
elements and regular photoshop is different... elements is the light version of photoshop .. on some tutorials it will make a difference
