| Are you sure you're using the Polygonal Lasso tool? That sounds like the Pen tool set to Shape Layers and a foreground color of white. | |

| In Hue/Saturation? Use the Lightness slider. You must have a selection only around the parts you want pure white or pure black. Otherwise, try Image > Adjustments > Threshold. |
