I want to shoot RAW images on my digital camera but I'm at a loss when it comes to how to edit RAW files.

I don't really want to use the RAW software that came with my camera but have read somewhere that you can edit RAW files in Photoshop. I have Photoshop CS but can't figure out how to use the RAW plug in.

Would the Photoshop CS RAW plug in work in the same way as the RAW shooter software I got with my camera? I mean if I used the Photoshop RAW plug in it's not going to compress my images. The reason for shooting RAW is that they are like a digital negative.

Any pointers on how to get started whould be most appreciated.

Thank-you

Lee

First, make sure you have the latest ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) update for CS1. But be warned, some raw files can only be opened using CS2. Go to the Adobe web site for a list of cameras supported in CS1.

ACR will not alter your raw files.

Also, try going into windows explorer and draging and droping your images into photoshop. I do that with photoshop 6 when I shoot with a nikon dx2 and don't have any problems (yes, raw images).

The RAW files stay RAW, look on them as a sort of negative, when you open them in the RAW converter (either PS or Raw shooter) all you do is view them, when you make your ajustments, and save you then make a copy in either jpeg or tiff with the ajustments, your original RAW remains untouched for further use.

Some cameras will let you shoot in a "RAW + JPEG" or "RAW + TIFF" format. This will allow you to save the RAW file as your untouched negative, and edit either your TIFF or JPEG. Down fall to this is that it sucks up a lot of space on your card.
