i`m having problems with the quickmask setting. the first is instead of being a ruby rudy color it is black. the second is when reducing the opacity I have to select the whole area without lifting the click on the mouse, otherwise if there is an overlap whith the previous selection it effects the opacity. I understand this is probably a very easy fix.
please can any one out there help.

To change the default colour of the Quick Mask from red to the colour of your choice simply double click the Quick Mask Icon on the vertical toolbar near the bottom .

The Quick mask is really an extension of the channels and should be treated as such. When you create a QM you are actually creating a new channel in the channels palette. Black is 100% visibility and 50% Grey being the lowest amount before a selection does not register as such. If you combine selections of various opacities on top of eachother if they total less than 50% opacity or less than 50% grey they will not and cannot be selected as a mask or a channel selection (any selection for that matter).
