As cbadland knows, I have been taking an extensive crash course in color management.

If the RGB color management is "off", it really will not make much difference, as long as (this is very important) the "Profile mismatches" box is checked. If a file has an embedded color space, then upon opening you will be given the choice of preserving, converting, or discarding the embedded color space. Of course, unless you have a good reason, you should preserve.

Any file that does not have an embedded color space, will automatically appear in the default space you have in your color settings.

So changing to "preserve embedded profiles" really will not make much difference. Any tagged files, you will be notified upon opening, any untagged files will automatically go to the default working space, in the case of qubert, that would be sRGB.

Now if I am wrong on any of this, please feel free to correct me.

Yep.
And I over-reacted on my response to qubert. (sorry)
Even CM "Off" still allows a good degree of management.

And even if you click off the "Profile mismatches" box, with your RGB color management set to "off", Photoshop will bring up a warning window saying to the effect of "Are you really sure you want to strip the embedded profile from this image? Are you really, really sure you want to do this? Cuz we don't think you should"

Photoshop is like a mother who knows best, and just wants to take care of you.

Every image I open/edit with potoshop 7 is dark. It's only dark on PS, if I open the same image in any other image viewer it's color is normal.

How can I fix this?

I just thought of this,

Use Adobe gamma (in control panel) to calibrate your system.

This should do the trick for you.

I had this same problem before. Also, when I went to save an image (like jpeg or gif), the colors would change.

What I did was change the color profile (sRGB) in PS to the same thing in my actual monitor. (Right click desktop -> properties -> settings -> advanced -> etc...)

Now when it comes to color management, I'm a complete idiot. I don't really know how color managment works, and don't really care for the most part. I don't even know if the advice I'm giving is good or not. All I know is that it WORKED for me, when everything else I tried (and believe me, I tried) failed.

One thing that still bothers me is that if there is an embeded profile on a PS document other than the one I'm using, and I go to save it as an image, the colors will still change shade. I don't know if this is normal or not or if it's maybe supposed to happen, all I know is that it happens.

Anyway that's my story, and that's about as much as I know about color managment.

Sickman - I have the same problem - using PS 7 and CS. Did you ever find a solution? I don't see anything in this thread which indicates a solution.

Thanks
