I was wondering what techniques people people perfer to use to add shadowing to images, like colored hand dranw images. But any shadowing techniques would be apprisiated for I am trying to find something that may work better then my current tech.

My hand-made shadows usually consist of two layers. One with a e.g. 10px gaussian blurred black layer giving it a soft edge. While the second one is only 5px gaussian blurred.

This creates a shadow with a sharper center. Of course, I guess it depends on what kind of shadow you're making and the light sources in the near area.

I 2nd the burn tool, I used this almost exclusively to add shadows to my anima drawings. Although hand drawn shadows also work very good. Unless doing drop shadows I almost never used the "canned" filters for any kind of shadowing.
