I'm new to the forum, but for the sake of brevity, I will refrain from babbling about my life story.

Long story short, I have quite a bit of graphic design experience in the past (about 10 years ago, I knew 3DSv4 inside and out), but then I started college and didn't have as much time anymore. Recently, a friend of mine showed me Photoshop CS and I was floored at some of the art I saw done with it. Unfortunately, he can't help me too much, as he's as much of a newb as I am (if not more). Now that I have some time on my hands, I want to get back into the swing of things. So I bought a copy of Photoshop CS and started to fiddle around with it. I've had some fun so far creating some textures, a few objects, learning how layers work (which is a genius idea, btw), etc.

I've pretty much reached the peak of my tinker ability and have to get a book or something in order to get better. While I'm not a beginner, there is still a lot of terminology and techniques that I have either forgotten, or never knew to begin with. I'm also not an actual artist, per se, so I don't know any of the jargon. I can sketch a bit, but the main reason I like graphic design is that it is possible to do decent work without being a spectacular sketch artist. The problem is that the beginner books are a little too beginner, and the advanced books are a little to advanced. What I'm looking for is a good intermediate book that doesn't use terms I don't understand (at least not without explaining them).

The type of images I'm trying to create probably fall under the fantasy/sci-fi/horror genre. I tend not to work with photos much. When I do, it's usually to manipulate them so much that they don't even look like photos anymore. To be more specific, what I'm trying to create is the type of images you might see in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (movie). Also, here are some sites to some artists going the same direction that I would like to:

http://www.kazan.ru/anfass/html/anfass.htm
http://www.graphicfantasy.com/main.html

So can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
