When I put a RAW image into Adobe Camera RAW, there is a massive reduction in the pixel count. (Nikon D3100 14 M pixels.) For example:
I shoot an image after setting my Nikon's Quality to JPG (fine). The file size on the camera’s chip is 4.2 MB. I put it into Photoshop CS6 and zoom in (enlarge it) so that it almost fills the window. At bottom left it tells me that the image is at only 16% enlargement, and at the bottom 4608 x 3072 pixels. I can enlarge it by a factor of 6.25 (to 100%) before pixellation can be seen.
By contrast, I shoot an identical photo in RAW. The file size on the camera’s chip is 13 MB. I put it into Photoshop Adobe Camera RAW and it almost fills the window. At bottom left it tells me that the image is at 98.5% enlargement, and at the bottom 1,000 by 667, (0.7 MP) 72 ppi. (Presumably 0.7 MP is Mega Pixels.) Massive loss of pixels has occurred.
I save that RAW as a TIFF (compression set to "none"). I zoom it in Photoshop’s window to nearly fill the window. At bottom left it tells me that the image is at 66% enlargement, 1000 x 667 pixels. The file size is 2 MB. I can enlarge it by a factor of only 1.5 (to 100%) before pixellation can be seen. The massive loss of pixels is confirmed.
No-one using RAW would accept this huge loss of pixels. So, what is going wrong please? Thanks for any help. |

Change the ppi. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

But where to set the ppi? With your clue I clicked on the blue link at the bottom of the Adobe Camera RAW window and got this window (attached). I reset the width and height to 3000 pixels and the ppi to 300 pixels per inch. When the processed image was put into Photoshop it had enough pixels for my purpose.
Thanks. |
