I need to use a soft brush but all I can use is a hard brush which pixelates the edges and doesn't work for me, I have tried resetting the brushes and that hasn't worked, so I'm stuck!

Welcome to the forum. Are you on Pencil or Brush?
Go for the default and reset your Pref File. Ctrl+Alt+Shift whilst opening PS (keep them held).
