I need to remove the gray background from photo while preserving the integrity of the photo. All the tools I have tried eat into the fan guard. I don't want to have to mask every individual space by hand.
Anybody have a quick and painless way to do this?

Quick and painless... Not that I can think of.
Unfortunately for you the background is a very similar colour to a lot of the fan itself.
If you have the option to retake the picture with better lighting and to put a piece of bright green or blue or pink card behind the fan effectively making a green screen then you should have a lot more luck with the simple methods.
