Masking, use your favourite method or the one most appropriate to the image. I would guess the boots in this image could be done with the Pen tool as they have fairly hard/crisp edges. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

so you could in theory take a picture of these shoes in any envirnoment and then just outline them however and crop them out onto a fresh background? |

In theory, yes. It will depend upon the way the boots were shot, these were obviously done in a studio environment, under proper lighting conditions, making the task easier.
Ultimately, I would say, find an image of boots that you want to cut out and then post it here for advice. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |
