Is there a way to generate a gradient using an image? See example attached.
Or do I just have to add all the points and sample the image. Making sure all the points are in the correct position!!

I am not aware of any way to make a gradient map from an image.
Only think I could think of that would come close is converting the strip to a vector and then loading it in to Photoshop as needed. Applying Gaussian Blur to it after rasterization etc.

I'm not really sure it's what you were after but you could do a pixel drag. Duplicate layer. Create a single column marquee selection (vertical) and press Ctrl+T to transform and then just drag the control handle.
