Hi everyone,

I'm an illustrator, and I've always wanted my work to look like it's on a canvas. I've tried various ways, burning a texture into the drawing etc, but it never looks ....real. However, this guy does a great job of doing the simple grain effect ....

You can see how it's VERY subtley anchored into the picture ...for lack of a better description. It seems to make digital art look more painterly and like it's on an actual canvas. It's almost like it 'sets' the digital paint.

This one is the one that confuses me the most - ...It looks so not digital even though it is!!!

Can anyone break down the effects he's used in this Illustration?

His other stuff is here too. http://sachinteng.tumblr.com/

I find that James Jean has the same effect in his work, but his really is on canvas.

I must stress that my work is COMPLETELY different from his, I just would like to see how elements of the effects that he uses may work in my work. If anyone can help me figure this out, I would be so grateful. It's been bugging me for years!

Hard to know exactly how he is doing it without asking. I have found most artist are more than happy to share tips and techniques if you do ask.

I presume he is using filters and stock textures as that last image that confuses you the most has dust and scratches over it.
Using pastels and desaturated colours helps the look too.

These could be originally done in pencil and later colored in Photoshop over the top explaining some of the appearance.

If you ask him and he wont give up his secrets then I will help you out some more but give him a chance first.
