Do you have access to other tools other than Photoshop with the regular keyboard and mouse? IE a pressure sensitive pen tablet?
As really there is no other way to turn a sketch into a digital painting effectively with nice results besides brushing over it. A mouse doesn't offer the smoothness and control a pressure sensitive tablet does.
That's the 'general' answer though. There is quite an extensive and good use of value in your sketch, you could try to use that to affect 'blocked in' colour.
Here's how I'd do it step by step, if anything needs further explanation don't be afraid to shout out.
- Make a cut out of the sketch
- Adjust the levels on it to have 'regular' colours a 50% grey, shadows darker than that and highlights lighter.
- Block in colour like you'd do with a 'normal' digital painting.
- Put the adjusted cut out of your edge on top of the blocked colour and experiment with the blend modes overlay soft light (maybe even hard light) and the opacity.
- Blur when needed but make sure the cut won't bleed out using the blur.
- Manually brush in some detail where needed later. _________________ Bart J.A.H. de Brouwer |

There are many techniques to achieve this but the first, most basic thing is to isolate your sketch/line drawing into a layer of its own. After which you can add color fills, gradients, textures and subtleties to bring your drawing to life. |

Using either Photoshop or Illustrator
First make a duplicate copy (new layer) of your image and lock the original layer.
Second you want to use the Pen Tool, or in Illustrator you can also use the Blob Brush Tool, and then make a drawing of your pencil drawing.
Another method, albiet a bit more crude, is to use the threshold filter to create a straight black and white image. Make sure you do this to a copy of your original scan. |
