I'm trying to find out if artwork done in PS can be vectorized while retaining any layer effects that have been added to it. Additionally, I'm wondering if a PS document can be saved and then opened in Illustrator with the vectored work and layer effects intact.

I ask because I only have PS and not Illustrator but a freelance client is asking for the finished work to be usable in Illustrator.

I'm using PS CS5 Extended. I also need an answer ASAP.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi I did a quick test and it seems not. From an initial attempt it seems only the text remains editable. You can open PSD within Illustrator just not have the layers styles remain editable.

I would download the trial version of Illustrator and check for yourself, but the short answer as far as I can tell is, no.

You can export paths to Illustrator though.
File Export > Paths to Illustrator

You can either export all paths, or just select a single path to export in the dialogue box and save them as a .AI file to be opened in Illustrator. I haven't used this quite that often, and if I did only to export a simple shape object (one compound path) not layered one upon the other and so on so I can't really vouch on its performance dealing with multiple complex paths and or layer effects.

Hopes this helps out.

Paths, yes, I think layer effects, no. (hence text being editable)
