Hello
I'm Dave - a total novice to Photoshop, I have had a few lessons on Chalksy but was wondering whether anyone could recommend the best kind of tablet to use with the software.
My online tutor recommended Wacom but i'm interested to know whether you seasoned lot thought others.

I used to use a Intuos 4, pretty serious, but I now use a Wacom Bamboo (not so serious). Horses for courses.
The size is the important thing and the level of touch sensitivity. If an artist, probably larger, as a retoucher I use about two square inches, so size is not a massive issue (pun intended). Touch sensitivity is relative, if you have had none then 256 levels may be sufficient, otherwise your work-flow may demand more.
Bottom line. What is your budget? And what is your intent?

This is the whole thing when it comes to picking a pen tablet. If you want to use it to draw, to retouch. I recently picked up a Cintiq for drawing as it took to long with my Intuos. But the choice is really the matter of setting your needs/demands up to your budget.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the welcome and for your thoughts.
I have $250 to spend.
The tablet is being bought to be used in Photoshop and Illustrator. I need to design flyers, posters and materials for a blog and for door-to-door distribution.
Maybe I should hit eBay and get something I little stronger then the Wacom tablet? |

The Intuos5 series of Wacom start at $229,- with the small versions. When going more into the drawing / design part of tablets I find that real-estate does matter.
When I used my intuos for drawing, I found it easier to use it in Photoshop than with Illustrator, as Illustrator doesn't allow you to spin your canvas like Photoshop does.
Haven't checked eBay recently, but there are some (older) Cintiqs (12 inch) ones up there for just under 300$ if you'd insist on having one with a screen. Bare in mind that those are not full HD but 1280x720 which might get you in trouble if you don't want to set it up as a second monitor (IE I have my primary monitor cloned to my Cintiqs).

Oh and about a 'Wacom' basically every tablet out there is one. Wacom has a few series within them though: Bamboo (cheaper, less pressure levels) - Intuos (2048 - iirc - pressure levels / touch ring etc - Cintiq (with an integrated screen).

I too was wondering what kind of tablet I should buy. I want to get into graphic design and incorporate a lot of my own drawings into my work. But I would like to make my drawings cleaner and think that a tablet would be the way to go.
What I'm reading is that Wacom's Intuos is the way to go. The only thing I'm a little confused about is that Wacom sells two kinds of Intuos's: one that has a white tablet, the other which is all black and labeled "Pro." Is the non-Pro that much inferior to the Pro? I thought the Bamboo was more for casual users. Budgeting is an issue but I don't want to buy something that's going to be limiting down the line.
Also, why do some of the Intuos' are numbered like 4 or 5? I'm assuming the Pro versions without a 4 or 5 are the oldest versions? |

I'm not too sure on the 'pro' part. I know the 4 / 5 etc. gives the version, of which 5 is the most recent release of the Intuos series.
Also, all Intuos tablets I've seen are black.
