I don't know if this is the right area or not, if not mods please move.
I need help with an effect that I have been wanting to learn. I'll post a pic for reference. I would like to learn how to take shapes and cut them into text, then make it look like it's all one shape. Like in this picture, the grass looks like it is growing inside the text. I like the 3 dimensional look... I hope this makes sense

Start with your type layer, type the text you want.
Then add a layer mask to this type layer.
If you don't know what a layer mask does or how it works then check this out...

Add your grass shape or any shape you want to this layer mask.
I would recommend unlink the layer mask to your text layer by clicking the chain link icon between the layer thumbnail and the mask thumbnail.
This means you can position the grass shape exactly where you want it on your text without your text also moving with it.
Once you have it in place, now you add you layer FX to get the 3D look.
Check out the picture below to see what layer FX I used and how the whole effect is contained to one text layer with a layer mask.

This is awesome! Thank you so much. Does it matter if my shape layer is a smart object imported from illustrator, or should I just make the shapes using the pen tool in photoshop?

So, I tried inserting the shapes I made in illustrator into the layer mask, but it gives me the options of pixels or path. Neither seem to work.

Hey I would recommend opening objects from illustrator onto their own layer or even their own document; then rasterizing that layer, then copying it over to your mask.
Also don't forget when copying into a layer mask that they are located in the channels tab not the layers tab and pasting from the layers tab often wont work.

Thanks for the tip... I think I found a work around by making my own shapes and saving them under the custom shapes tab. It seems to work pretty well, but I'll give your advice a go and see how that turns out. Thanks again!
