Cannot Reset Tools

Hi there, I am using CS4 version 11.0.2.
I lost the ability to use the select/modify/feather when using the magic wand tool. I was sure to uncheck contiguous etc
So I went online and found various suggestions.
I have now tried:
1. checking that I had all the right settings eg rgb etc
2. resetting that specific tool
3. resetting/deleting ALL tool preferences.
none of these solutions have worked
Eek
does anyone have any other suggestions?
this is driving me nuts!
