Hi all,
I'm teaching myself how to touch up images in PS CS5 in order to make some extra cash on the side. I'm starting by practicing with my own photos. Below is one that I took a couple years ago. The original is pretty dark, and for the one below it I added a couple of layers where I adjusted the levels and brightness/contrast setting on the image.
I can't say why but something still seems off about that last picture, I think either the colors look a little washed out or the skin of the subjects of the photo seem a little too bright compared to the rest of the image. Would someone mind giving me some feedback on how I can improve this image and images like it?
Thanks! |

What your describing with the 2nd photo being too bright is blown highlights.
The table and parts of the white shirt are pure white.
When you have made the dark part of the image brighter, you have made the bright part of the image too bright.
Best way I know of to work with images like this is to...
-Duplicate the image onto a new layer
-De-saturate and invert this new layer
-Gaussian Blur the new layer until fine details/edges have been lost
-Change the blending mode of this new layer to soft light
-Drop the opacity of the new layer to less than 50% (mine was 35%)
-Then create a brightness contrast adjustment layer on top of the other two and edit to suit |
