Hello there !

I've been working with PS for a while, but only recently I started going pro, after getting hired somewhere else where I take photos of products and I have to edit them in PS (white/transparent background, removal of scratches & stains etc.).

Generally I don't have major problems, but sometimes, weird things happen, that I just don't understand:

1. I try to use keyboard shortcuts but they don't work until pressing ESC or left clicking like I'm using the current tool on the image. For instance, I try to CTRL+S (save), but nothing happens. I press the mouse button or ESC, I press CTRL+S again, and it saves the document. Or I press L, for the lasso tool, but instead I get the layer menu dropping down from the main menu. That's quite peculiar, because that is what happens when I press ALT+L, but I certainly don't have ALT pressed while trying to get my lasso tool. Again, I just get rid of the menu by clicking somewhere, and when I press L I finally get my lasso tool.

2. Using the brush, usually with quite a large one. I trace a line, but the trace is not continuous, it's like it stutters along the way and it's drawing a brush-shape every X milliseconds. I enhanced the performance settings, allowing more RAM and everything, I still get this behaviour.

That's all I have for now, I'll come back with other issues if I have any left. They're by no means a big deal, but I could do without these glitches, sometimes it's annoying, when you have a lot of work to do.

I have Photoshop CS5.

Sometimes my shortcuts play up but not quite they way you describe.

Whats your system specs?

As for the second problem check the brush spacing.

Unfortunately this issue is quite common yet solutions for it aren't.
With 2gb of ram and integrated graphics your at the lower end of the required system specs for CS5.
Other software with global shortcut keys can cause problems.
Old preference files from existing versions of Photoshop can cause problems.
And the list goes on... Crazy

There are lots of people who experience the same problem as you.
Unfortunately the solution that seems to appear the most is one you have already touched on. Clicking somewhere / changing focus.

One of the best I came across was when they start to fail use Ctrl+Alt+Shift+K (according to the author this always works even when other shortcuts wont) to bring up keyboard shortcut menu, then press enter to get rid of it then try your shortcut.
This avoids changing tools and keeps interrupting workflow to a minimum.

Some people claim to have solved the problem completely it by upgrading this or uninstalling that but there was nothing to indicate a common cause or that there solution worked for others.

Anyway that about all the help I can give on this one. Good luck with it.
