Hi guys.
Playing around with a couple of images I shot just trying to get some more experience. I'd appreciate any feedback and comments on what looks good, what doesn't, and I'd also like to see some of your improvements. I know my workflow isn't the best and I am trying to learn some tips and tricks from the pros. I'll post the jpg version and the psd for those interested in helping out. Thanks in advance!
First off, I think the top of the cube looks off (the colors) but I can't really find a way to fix it. Also the hand on the cube... something just doesn't look right.

Is that light coming from the cube (at top) or projected onto it? Because you need to do something about that light. Some of it should be projected in the environment around the box and onto the man standing besides it.
Also after taking a look at your psd it seems to me like that's sunlight shining on the top. So like I said, try and do something about the light or find a photo that fits better. _________________ I'm an educator in photoshop and other graphic programs. Don't hesitate to ask me for help.

No. The cube is supposed to be catching light coming in from the windows behind / above the subject's position. I have experimented a bit, but can't seem to get it right. Using the dodge tool lightens it up, but pretty soon I get that burning effect instead of a natural lighting effect that'll match the scene. Any suggestions on what to use or how to work around the issue with the dodge tool? |

I wouldn't use the dodge tool. Try selecting the area you want and use Image - adjustments - try out the assorted tools. You know levels, hue/sat, curves and so on.
One thing I would seriously consider if I were you is to simply copy another side of the cube and paste over that one. Then color correct that one to fit. _________________ I'm an educator in photoshop and other graphic programs. Don't hesitate to ask me for help.

hi,
well no expert still leaning a lot of things myself...
not sure if i have the time to give a example but a few thoughts and tips...
1. i always look carefully at shadows and try to determine where the main source of light comming from.. in this image i think there too much shadow you added and the look like there in the wrong direction like for the person. for exaqmple, the light source seems to be on the right and you have a lot of shadow on the right part of the leg.. in this case i don't think i would add any shadows there...
2. possibly use more masks than you use , for example i would dup the original layer make a good selection of the person and then make a mask .. it a lot easier to address any mistake in the selection... then easily put the block underneath and it would be more natural looking and easier to address any imperfections.///
3. on the block, a lot of problems with it... the main problem i think was when the picture was first taken.. issue with colors... but that what photoshop is for... take care of things like that but it always requires trial and error to see which works best...
a. there too much yellow in the image and that why you have those yellow edges also you lost a lot of text and a few details as a result processing.. possibly how to address this, i would maybe add a black white adjustment layer then withthe slide take out the yellow , not too much , and then maybe a brightness contrast layer and possibly repaint in color mode ... this would ensure reatain the texture of the block and fine details ..
b. now the main image is grainy.. you may need to make the blick alittle grainy ..
4. the hand.... this where using mask can make things easier... now i am assuming a mask would be made
a. theproblem with the hand and fingers is that they don't look like there resting on a object, generaly when finger is resting , the bottom of the finger will be flatten or if the object is soft be pusted in a little... so what you want to do is make the bottom of finger flatten, if a mask is use (recommended) you just have to paint black to get the flat look...
b. now the selection of the hand area it self is a rough there a lot of haloes around the edge of the hand... a better selection is always best but you can't , if using mask, paint black to clean up the edges......
look at this video , it a good one, has a lot of tips on compositesm including how to make your hands and fingers and feet look more realistic with cutout..

well i hope those thoughts helps you out |
