I have been using Photoshop CS5.1 for a few months and now when I try to use my brushes it gives me this error " Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined Alt-click to define a source point."....

hi
sounds like you don't have the eye turned on , on the layer that your trying to use the clone tool on.
so make sure the eye is on |

hi,
the "eye" is a indicator if the layer is turn on on or not..
note the box for the eye is on the far left of the layer pallet..
in the image below..
you will notice the "eye" is turn on for the top layer
the eye for the bottom 2 layers is off... nothing is shown in the little box on the left
when you have a layer hilighted and the eye is off (not showing) for that layer, and when try to use any tool on it you will get that kind of notification you got when you tried the clone tool |

It may also be exactly what it says. If you are using the clone stamp then make sure that you have done an "ALT-CLICK" in an area which actually contains pixels before you start cloning... these will be the pixels which are copied when you use the clone stamp. That's IF you are trying to use the clone stamp.
You don't get this message when using brushes. Make sure that you have actually selected the brush tool (not the clone stamp tool). |

I second "renata's" answer, you honestly won't get that error using the "brush" tool, it's in fact a message because you have selected the "clone" tool. The "clone" tool and "brushes" are on top of one another in the tool bar, and when working away can be selected by accident, happens often. A good thing to start using are short cut keys. This will ensure you are selecting the tool you are after. |

Do you have sampling set to 'current layer' when not applicable?
