Please help me round my image corners

Hi! I'm a PhotoShop newbie. I hope some Angel

out there will take pity on me and walk me through the solution to my query.

On my website http://celebritytypes.com/philosophers/ I use pictures of celebrities that are all the exact same size. Someone told me I should round the corners of these images. One thing to note is that the corners need to be transparent so I can use the images on different backgrounds, not just on a white background.

So what I need are instructions on how to chop off the corners of an image + how to batch duplicate the procedure.

I have tried to search for the solution myself, and I must say I feel like quite the idiot for not being able to work with any of the solutions in this thread: http://www.photoshopforums.com/rounded-rectangle-tool-not-so-rounded-corners-vt18462.html?highlight=rounded+corners

In particular, I get stuck after either modifying a marquee selection (what to do then?) or creating a rounded rectangle with the shape tool (ditto).

hi,
first of all if you want transparency you need to save the final result in gif or png or tiff .. if for a website then it going to be either gif or png ...

now.....
1. make dup layer of your original and then turn off the background layer....

2. now use your marquee tool and draw your box and position the way you want

3. now go to select>modify> smooth , you will get alittle window where you can put in the radius for the corners.... suggest start off with 15.. click ok andyou will see the rounded corners... if that number doesn't work out then just go back to modify >smooth and put in a new value .....

nowonce you have your reounded corner the way you want...
then do a inverse and then delete.. at this pint your image will have a rounded coners and you'll see the checkboard parttern and this image you save in gif or png...
note: jpg will not retain transpanecy info..... that why you need to save in png or gif , they will ....

now as far as batch processing... well you want to do is create a action... that should do it...

ideallyall your image are the same.... but if not you may need modify your action to readjust the the size of the dancing ants....

note you can also setup your action to save your images...

I personally like using masks for doing this. The reason why is you can blur the mask to get a soft edge.

To do this just follow the previous instructions and instead of hitting delete use the create layer mask button. This will mask the unwanted part of the photo. Then go to filter>Gaussian Blur and blur the mask to the desired edge.

Here is an example. You could also use feather before you delete the unwanted data, but I like the mask better because I feel you have more control.

Hey, that's a cool site - I've got a book by Isabel Myers-Briggs downloaded on my Kindle, calling out "read me... read me...!". But that's a another story...

As you can see, you'll get lots of help on this forum if you want to go ahead and round the corners. But I'd ask whether you're really sure that they need the corners rounded? Not just because the pictures look OK already, but because it's generally fine to leave photos rectangular.

Photos are generally in jpeg format (as yours are). And as you've worked out, jpegs don't support transparency. If you convert them to gifs/png-8 they'll look like crap and you're giving yourself a lot of work. PNG-24 supports transparency but there are some browser issues.

If you want some added punch you could try adding a plain border, but honestly (not that I'm much of a style guru) I wouldn't look at that site and care much about that, I'd just start reading the interesting stuff.

Doesn't need to be a Photoshop solution, probably more elegant would be code based.

Thanks, jerryb4417, seems to have worked nicely.

For a procedure which works as well, go http://matthom.com/archive/2004/09/10/fast-rounded-corners-in-photoshop and although it's dated 2004, it works just fine in CS3. Haven't tried in CS5 (different machine in different location)
