In the layers palette what's the difference between opacity and fill? |

Opacity effects the overall layer and everything on it, more often fill is used for layer styles and opactiy.
Clear? No? I almost confused myself!

Yes I'm still confused but a little experimentation, things might become clearer.
As far as I understood you, opacity affects the overall opacity of a layer but fill affects the opacity of affects. |

Aside from different behavior of some of the Layer Styles, some of the Blend modes for a layer work differently with fill and opacity. |

hi,
it not a stupid question.... this is one of the those questions hard to see and yet simple although i still sometime have a hard time with the difference between fill and opactiry.. and applying the info... in projects.. plus like a lot of people very seldom even think about the fill...
in essence
1. opacitys effects all elements on the layer... simple as that
2. where as fill only effect the main object on a layer, and not anything else....!!!! this can be very usefull ...
this is a little tutoial that maybe explains alittle better than i can..... and you can get a sense how to use it in your projects..

For several Blend modes(Color Burn, Linear Burn, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge, Vivid Light, Linear Light, Hard Mix) Fill opacity behaves non-lineary and have sutly different effect then regular opacity.
For Burn modes, for example, fill opacity has the effect of exaggerating the result in the darks.
For Dodge modes, for example, fill opacity increases the contrast at the light areas.
And sometimes it is just the thing you want for your image.
So these features are not confusing, it just takes time and practice to find the right use for them |

Easy demo:
Try writing some large text and giving it a drop shadow adjustment layer. Then leave the opacity at 100% but reduce the fill to 0. You get nothing there but an interesting drop shadow in the shape of the letters. |
