Hello !
I'm currently working on a project that uses Arial. However, EVERY TIME I open a file that has Arial (not bold, not italic, just regular Arial) text, I get the message "Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update those layers now?" I click no because otherwise it takes every instance of Arial regular in my file and changes it to some other font.
I tried creating a new file, with just Arial type to rule out any unknown characters in my text box... and I still get this same annoying error message.
The worst part is that in my current project I have to modify the colors of all the Arial text, which it will not let me do until I update the layers and then have to manually change the font back to Arial. I tried reinstalling Arial and that didn't change anything. I don't have this issue in Illustrator either.
I was hoping someone here might have a clue as to what is going on or any other ideas as to how I can fix this before I go mad? LOL Thanks...

Welcome to the forum.
The message normally appears when you don't have the font specified. In this instance it is Arial (a system font given that you are using a Windows machine, not if Mac). Therefore perhaps you could look at different versions of that font (not just bold, oblique etc) from different foundries to ascertain whether you own that font or not.
Do you own a Mac? _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

Thank you for the response and the welcome!
I am actually using a PC, running on Windows 7. I do have Arial installed, which is why I am so puzzled by this. I recently installed a large font package but then deleted them due to Photoshop opening WAY too slowly once you have a few thousand fonts. So I'm back to a couple hundred, Arial is still there, yet photoshop keeps trying to update it.
I can even make a new file... type something in Arial... close the file and when I reopen it, Photoshop insists on updating it and changing the font.
If I do the same thing but for Arial Bold or Italic, it opens without issue or any error messages. |

Would it be worth looking at install/delete font via windows and see whether it's actually there? Search for "font" under help for the link if you haven't done it before.
I noticed on my system (Windows 7) that it lets me "Preview, delete, or and hide individual fonts in this font family". So maybe something has "hidden" or deleted this individual font within the Arial font family.
If no luck, perhaps you could make sure you have a copy of the full basic font, then uninstall+reinstall via Windows.
It does look like that font is somehow missing. |
