I have a couple of external USB hard disks which I backup on and use for long time storage. I started depending on these external HD after recordable CD ROMs failed me. I'm wondering what the shelf life of my data is on an external Western Digital hard disk is? I mean can I forget the data there or do I have to perform a certain procedure every few years to prolong the data life on that medium?
I hope this qualifies as a "technical" issue, fitting the technical part of the forum |

I would backup on a cloud based system too as well as hard physical copies that I have (external HD's etc), the downside is the uploading, but you can have some confidence that once it's there, it should be fairly secure.
Nothing is failsafe, so keep multiple copies is the only real advice I can give you here. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |
