Im currently working through a tutorial to create planets. Ive got to the point now to where i have a basic understanding of how to make them (though not that well yet). My problem now is the shadow detail and the slight glow around the sphere to create the atmosphere. The tut kinda hazes over the step by step items, assuming the reader has a good understanding of what needs to happen to get from A-->B.
I was wondering if someone could make a tut or show/tell me how to create shadows on a sphere.

This is where i am currently at in my planet creation.

This is an example of what im working towards (just the shadow).

and

Thx in advance for any help.

use the lightning tool in Render>lighting effects and toy with that or u could try things in the layer style tools e.g, outer/inner glow, drop shadow

Or make a selection on a new layer and feather it by desired amount and fill with colour and set the blend mode.

well there are tons of ways to do it, personally the ways listed aren't exact the best, fission's is about right

simply duplicate the layer of the planet
throw that layer behind the first planet nad name it "atmosphere or something"

THEN go filter-blur-gaussion blur
you can see it should give you not only a good glow but also a glow the same color as yoru planet so it looks more realistic

if you want it white then after blurring it go "crlt+u" -colorize button, then move the saturation down to 0

thats the atmosphere, and when you ahve yoru shadow simply use a big fat eraser with a low hardness level around the shadow or put hte shadow on top

to find out an easy way to do this i actually have a resource/tut file http://www.deviantart.com/view/3720436/

the atmosphere was done with the above, this tut just shows a good simple shadow

sorry quick explanation, if you need anymore help then post up
