Hello,
I work at a school where we have purchased CS5.5 and I am downloading it onto Mac laptops. The process is extremely painstaking as the first download takes around an hour, and I discovered that if I line up more downloads, each one takes progressively longer. I need to download onto 40 laptops. Is there a way I can speed up this process? Will contacting Adobe and requesting a disc (I assume they won't give me 40) make a difference?

Lastly, is there any disadvantage to working with Photoshop once it's on the laptop?

Thanks!

Hi imagemaker,

Have you purchased then educational licenses from Adobe, if not you may only have one activation regardless of how many installs you do. It would be frustrating to go through all that and only be able to get one working.

That aside, the better way would be to download the installation files from Adobe and copy to a USB device. You can then copy the files over and install from there - which should work out a lot quicker.

Usually at schools and workplaces the computers are networked, but I'm not sure how that works if you have Macs. Networking makes installing software like this easier because you can install onto the network and then whisper the software down to the individual devices over night. You then just buy additional licences from adobe as you need them.

A slow internet connection shouldn't cause too many problems in this scenario as once you have Photoshop installed you will only need the internet for occasional updates.

Hope that helps

Hm, sounds like a possible way to get out of this mess. I assume we purchased an educational license. What else could it be?

I've installed on a dozen or so of the laptops and I try Photoshop out on each one. If it works, then it's on there fine, right?

How would I copy onto usb? Would a simple flashdrive of 1 or 2 gb work? At what point in the online download process due I choose usb? Are you saying that from the usb I can quickly copy it over? If a straight from online download takes 2 hours, how much faster will a usb be?

Thanks!

Actually I have now tried saving just Photoshop from my CS5 package and it gets on my usb, but then when I try to open it, it says error 6- whatever that is. I think the programs may be protected somehow so you can't make endless copies. It would make sense.

When you say you've saved just Photoshop, do you mean that you've copied just the installation files for Photoshop out of the CS5 package?

If so, installations don't work like that. They actually need to be "run" which is a process where all sorts of things are created, copied and tailored to the place where they are going.

It's not a problem that's easy to solve on a forum. I have no idea what error 6 is, for example. I know that people here would definitely try to help if they could.

Matt's query about whether you have a site licence is very pertinent. If you do, then I would imagine that you qualify for some sort of support from Adobe, who could get you going.

If you've only bought one copy and are trying to install it individually on 40 laptops, then you are making one hell of a big rod for your own back. Aside from creating licencing problems.

Most work places have systems in place where they can set up, say, Microsoft Office in a way which minimises work and support issues. This sounds like the sort of system you need, but it's more of a network issue than a Photoshop issue. You're going to have the same problem no matter what you install.

But you really need to find out what your licencing situation is before you go further. I know that if I were in your position I would get the school to pay for somebody to set my network up to make this sort of task easier for the future (or perhaps your education department can help).

Hope you sort it out.
