Is there an easy way to clean up the white background of the attached product photo without loosing the shadows of product? Wrinkles and uneven areas are especially visible in the background above the top edge of the product ? I'm using PS CS3.

Try using a levels adjustment.

For best results, click the magic wand with a fairly high tolerance (say, 55?) on the white background. Make sure that 'Contiguous' is checked. This selects just the background and leaves the device alone.

Now you can use image > adjustments > levels on it. (Alternatively, you could use curves). Bring the white slider on the right towards the middle until you're happy.

If you're not happy with this, you canry a Filter > Blur on the selection first, but I think you'll find that the levels by itself is OK.

Hope that helps.

After you've make the selection you can set the edges to be a bit softer by using select > modify > feather. Experiment with different values (start with, say 22). So, select, then feather, then levels.

Be aware that this will also feather the outside edge of the background. To counteract this you could simply crop the photo afterwards.
