Good Day All,
I'd like to talk with someone familiar with Sports Photography...
I live in a college town and have proximity to three+ high schools. With football practice coming up in a matter of days, I'd like some advice on how to approach the Athletic Directors of the respective schools for permission to 'shoot' a game or two--maybe more.
What I've read thus far indicates that a portfolio would be beneficial-I have none.
I'm an amateur photographer, all geared up and no where to go...

Does anyone have the time and experience to share?

Regards,
Tim

Hey Tim and welcome. :)

I think your best, and first, bet would be to reach out to the media/press relations people at the schools. They likely have someone who deals with providing credentials to people so that they can take photos during the game. The smaller the school, generally speaking, I would think the more likely they would be to emphasize with you.

Perhaps you could even offer yourself to them as a photographer for their needs. So, for example, you take photos, they can use them and you can use them in your portfolio (make sure any agreement is clear on that).

I hope that this helps!

Thanks,

Patrick

Thanks Patrick, Hadn't thought about the County Schools Admin. I'll give that a try and hopefully post some positive results

Would it be useful if you had some business cards printed, which you could give out?

My pleasure, Tim. Also, I apologize, for some reason I read your post as colleges and not high schools. Colleges definitely have media relations people, but high schools might not. But, depending on the area, high school sports are a big deal with local media coverage, so they might.

In that case, the best thing to do would be to call and ask and see where you go. A random idea is that you could also approach local newspapers who cover high school sports and ask them if they are looking for anyone to take pictures for them.

And, as renata suggested, even as an amateur, you still want to make sure you come across as someone who takes this seriously. :)

I hope that this helps.

Thanks,

Patrick

Yep-Good Ideas All. I've made contact with a pro who is willing to show me the ropes...My brother-in-law just started a new business, and he has had a terrific experience with a web designer. Taking the time to enter this genre correctly, and with references as best I can.
Thanks for the feedback!
