Can't load Editor in Photoshop Elements 8

I've installed PSE 8 for the first time and when I try to open the Photoshop editor I get the message ..... "Loading the PSE Editor Workspace" .... which disappears after for 90 seconds but the editor doesn't load. The Photoshop forum suggests many workarounds that haven't worked for me and I've tried reinstalling without success.

One thing my default printer is a Dell All-in-One but I don't want to remove that. Any suggestions?
